As students enter grade school, reading and writing become essential parts of their academic journey. By practicing these skills, students get ahead of the curve and they will set themselves up for success in future grades.
This course is designed for students in Grades 1-3. It is broken down in the following over-arching lesson goals:
Trimester 1:
This trimester focuses on grammar lessons, including adverbs, synonyms, and homonyms, culminating in writing strong paragraphs. It integrates grammar practice with sequential writing and prediction, honing paragraph-writing skills through narrative practice.
Trimester 2:
Students take the next step by diving into Story Analysis and Fiction/Non-Fiction components. They will read various books like "Bad Case of Stripes" and "They All Saw a Cat," analyzing characters, identifying main ideas, and understanding cause and effect. They will also explore non-fiction with books like "Koko’s Kitten" and "A Ticket Around the World," learning to recall facts, answer complex questions, and sequence real-life stories. Additionally, students will delve into poems, understanding different types and creating their own using word families. The course will culminate in an exam assessing their understanding of fiction vs. non-fiction, reading comprehension, and writing skills in letters and poems.
Trimester 3:
Finally, students combine all their newly gained skills and knowledge to embark on literary adventures with easy chapter books. They will hone their fluency and comprehension skills through delving into new vocabulary, using context clues, and dictionary skills. Students will explore chapter book elements and develop paragraph writing skills, analyzing setting, comparing elements, and grasping problem-solving in narratives. Lastly, they will delve into nonfiction, focusing on fact vs. opinion, vocabulary, and summarization.
