Scholastic Writing Competition

Individualized coaching to help Irvine students craft standout, original submissions for the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.

Why the Scholastic Awards Matter

The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards is one of the longest-running recognition programs for creative High Schoolers in the country, with regional and national judging across categories like personal essay, short story, poetry, and flash fiction. A strong submission asks students to do more than write well for class — it asks them to develop a distinct voice and see a piece through from first draft to final polish.

iLearn's coaching is built around that process: students choose a category, workshop original material with an instructor, and revise toward a submission-ready piece — with individualized feedback at every stage rather than generic writing-class notes.

Scholastic Writing Competition Coaching

Grades: 9 - 12
Focus: Competitive academic writing, research-based argumentation, and portfolio development

This course guides students through developing two original writing projects — from idea generation to final submission. Students explore multiple writing categories while studying award-winning work to understand what makes a piece genuinely effective.

Along the way, students learn to brainstorm and refine ideas, select the right category, conduct research, and build structure and voice — shaping each project into a competition-ready piece. Every project moves through multiple rounds of drafting, editing, and revision, with teacher feedback focused on clarity, creativity, organization, and impact.

Category & Award Guidance

Matching each student to the right category — Personal Essay & Memoir, Short Story, Poetry, Flash Fiction, and more — and what regional and national judges look for.

Craft & Revision Coaching

Narrative, poetic, and persuasive technique, with structured drafts and revision cycles.

Original Voice Development

Generating authentic ideas and a distinct point of view, rather than a formulaic essay.

Submission Portfolio Support

Final polish and formatting so a piece is ready to submit through the regional affiliate.
