Why Publishing Matters
Published and Distributed
Students publish original books with official ISBNs through Amazon or IngramSpark — creating real, verifiable academic and creative works that last well beyond the program itself.
Top-Tier School Recognition
Top universities and private schools look beyond grades for evidence of passion, creativity, and sustained impact. A published book demonstrates all three at once, in a form admissions officers can actually verify.
Social Responsibility
Books donated to CHOC reflect more than a finished project — they show sustained effort, thoughtful insight, and genuine community engagement, qualities that strengthen any competitive application.
How The Program Works
01
Structural Planning
Students define their core concept, characters, and plot, building a clear framework with mentor-guided outlining.
02
Story Development
Students draft their manuscript chapter by chapter under ongoing mentor support, developing language, pacing, and character.
03
Language Refinement
Multiple revision rounds plus a final pass by a professional editor produce a polished, publication-ready manuscript.
04
Illustration & Layout
Working with professional illustrators, students create two color covers and four interior illustrations, then move into book layout.
05
Publication & Distribution
The finished book is published with an official ISBN, distributed through Amazon, and donation copies are delivered to CHOC.
Frequently Asked Questions
The program runs 12–16 weeks, with a total time commitment of 58–64 hours including writing sessions, illustration work, editing rounds, and layout. Pacing is structured to keep students moving steadily without overwhelming their regular schoolwork.
Yes. Every student's finished book is registered with an official ISBN and listed on Amazon, with IngramSpark available as an upgrade for wider distribution. The book is a real, verifiable publication — searchable by name and purchasable like any other Amazon title.
The program is designed for students in grades 6 through 12. Younger students benefit from earlier classes in our Reading & Writing and Integrated Reading & Writing programs, which build the foundational skills needed for a project of this scope.
Yes. Each student receives printed copies of their finished, illustrated book. Additional copies can be ordered through Amazon at print-on-demand cost. Donation copies for CHOC are coordinated separately as part of the program.
Through our partnership with CHOC Children's Hospital of Orange County, student books are donated to young patients during their treatment. Students participate in the donation coordination as part of the program, gaining real experience with community engagement and project follow-through.
Students should be comfortable writing complete paragraphs and willing to commit to multi-week creative work. We offer a free consultation before enrollment to discuss readiness, fit, and the right starting point for your child.
